Medicare Part C Plans: 5 Things To Know Before Choosing Your Coverage

Sep 7, 2021

Medicare Part C, or Medicare Advantage, is insurance plans offered by private companies. It provides medical and hospital coverage, with other added benefits. If you are considering obtaining a Medicare Part C plan, here are five things you know.

What Does Medicare Part C Cover?
It works as an alternative to original Medicare. It has similar coverage as Parts A and B. But, it includes emergency and urgent care. More so, it offers additional coverage for dental and eye care and hearing aids. This also includes wellness services, fitness memberships, and drug coverage.

What Medicare Part C Plans Can You Choose From?
Your options for Medicare Part C plans include the following:

  • Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)
  • Private Fee-For-Service (PFFS)
  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)
  • Special Needs Plans (SNPs)

How Much Does It Cost?
Premiums for Part C differ across plans, with some not charging the plan premium. Still, the average premium for Part C plans in 2019 was $348 annually. You might also need to pay for copays, a fixed amount an insured person has to pay for specific treatments. It costs between $10 to $20 per doctor visit.

Out-of-the-pocket costs for Plan C are also cheaper than original Medicare. That has an annual limit. Upon reaching this limit, you won’t have to pay for covered services.

How Can You Enroll in a Medicare Part C Plan?
You can contact 1-800-MEDICARE to know which part C plans are available in your area. Then, ask for the paper enrollment form, accomplish it and return it to the company. Make sure to ask questions. Clarify the covered services before completing your enrollment.

When Can You Enroll for Medicare Part C?
You can join a Medicare Part C plan on the following set-time periods:

  • Within three months before and after your 65th birthday for initial enrollment
  • From April to June, with the coverage starting in July, for general enrollment.
  • Between October 15 to December 7, for switching Advantage plans or opting out of it

Before choosing a Medicare Part C plan, make sure to know what it covers. The price and enrollment set-time periods are crucial. This way, you’ll know which plans to choose depending on your financial capabilities and needs.
