Why So Many Plan Choices Matter

Does the plan include YOUR doctors and specialists?

Which hospitals are in-network (Cedars-Sinai, UCLA, USC, Kaiser, etc.)?

What are the REAL out-of-pocket costs (copays, coinsurance, max limits)?

Are your prescriptions covered, and at what cost tier?

What extra benefits do you actually value (gym, dental, vision, OTC allowance)?

Does the carrier have good ratings for customer service and claims processing?
Overwhelmed by Choices?

Understanding Medigap Pricing in California
- Attained-Age Rated (most common): Your premium is based on your current age and increases as you get older.
- Issue-Age Rated: Your premium is set by your age when you first buy the policy and doesn't increase due to aging.
- Community-Rated (least common): Everyone pays the same premium regardless of age.
Guaranteed Issue Rights
- California offers strong consumer protections. During your Initial Enrollment Period and certain special situations, you cannot be turned down for a Medigap plan due to pre-existing conditions.

Common Medicare Questions from Los Angeles Residents
Get answers to the questions I hear most often from LA Medicare beneficiaries
There’s no universal “best” plan — especially in LA, where healthcare access varies a lot by neighborhood.
Medicare Advantage (MA) can work well if your doctors are in-network with major LA systems like Kaiser Permanente, UCLA Health, Cedars-Sinai, Providence, or PIH, but networks change often.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap) is ideal for people who split time between LA, Palm Springs, or out-of-state (snowbirds), because it lets you see any Medicare-accepting provider nationwide without referrals.
Most of my clients choose based on whether their primary doctor is in a Medicare Advantage network, their prescription needs, and their budget vs. out-of-pocket tolerance.
LA County is huge — with over 10 million people across dozens of zip codes. Medicare Advantage plans are approved by county, but networks can vary heavily between areas like Santa Monica / West LA, Downtown LA, San Fernando Valley, Long Beach, and Pasadena / Glendale / Burbank.
Carriers like Kaiser, SCAN, UnitedHealthcare, Anthem, and Blue Shield all have different footprints, and hospitals may or may not participate in certain networks.
So your friend in Burbank may have a totally different set of plans than someone in El Segundo — even though it’s the same county.
Some of the biggest systems — like Cedars-Sinai, UCLA Health, Hoag, and Huntington Hospital — have limited participation in certain Medicare Advantage networks.
Others — like Kaiser and PIH — have tightly integrated networks.
If keeping a specific doctor (or a hospital like Cedars) is non-negotiable for you, we need to confirm network status before you enroll. I check this for you every time — and re-check during Annual Enrollment, because Los Angeles networks change frequently.
Yes. As of 2023, Medicare Part D covers the shingles vaccine Shingrix at no cost to you — even in LA’s large pharmacy chains like CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Costco, Ralphs / Kroger, and local independent pharmacies.
Just show them your Medicare Part D card.
For 2026:
• Part A: $0 for most people
• Part B: Standard monthly premium is $202
• IRMAA: High-income LA residents (especially retirees in the entertainment industry, real estate, or tech) may pay more based on tax returns from two years prior.
I walk you through the income brackets and help estimate your exact cost.
Absolutely — I serve Medicare beneficiaries everywhere in LA County, including Santa Monica & West LA, Hollywood & Los Feliz, Burbank & Glendale, Pasadena & Altadena, Long Beach & the South Bay, San Fernando Valley, Palmdale & Lancaster, and Whittier, Downey & Montebello.
Whether you’re stuck on the 405, relaxing in Manhattan Beach, or nestled in the foothills of La Cañada — I make Medicare easy with phone, Zoom, or in-person consultations.
Yes — and LA residents have a unique advantage.
You can switch:
• October 15 – December 7 (Annual Enrollment Period)
• January 1 – March 31 for Medicare Advantage (MA-OEP)
• During certain Special Enrollment Periods
Plus: California’s Medicare Birthday Rule — You get a 60-day window around your birthday to switch Medigap plans without medical underwriting — a huge benefit for LA residents who worry about rate increases or health changes.
This varies year-to-year, but generally:
• Cedars-Sinai, UCLA Health, Hoag, Providence, and Huntington Hospital participate in select Medicare Advantage plans — but not all of them.
• Kaiser Permanente only accepts Kaiser Medicare Advantage.
If a specific hospital is a priority for you, I help find plans that truly support your preferred providers.

Important Deadlines

Turning 65?
You have 7 months to enroll (3 months before your birthday, your birthday month, and 3 months after)

Annual Enrollment Period
