When you encounter an emergency, it is helpful that you know necessary first aid skills so you can offer to assist. Prepare to act in these occurrences and help save a life instead of becoming a helpless bystander.

  • Treating Shock
Most of the time, if the person has lost a significant amount of blood, it leads to a sudden drop in blood pressure. If the bleeding continues, the victim may undergo shock.
       – Make sure the victim is lying on their back with their feet raised a foot above their head.
       – If the victim isn’t breathing, quickly administer CPR.
       – Check the victim’s airway and if they aren’t bleeding or vomiting.
       – Cover them with a blanket to preserve their body heat.
  • Cleaning a Wound
No matter the kind of wound – scrape, burn, deep cut – the first immediate action is to clean it to prevent infection. Having an infected wound can lead to more dangerous illnesses, so sterilization is a vital step. Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before any physical contact with the wound to prevent unwanted bacteria from entering.

Find a sterile cloth, gauze, or any absorbent material and gently apply pressure until it stops bleeding. If the bleeding does not cease and ends up soaking through the fabric, seek medical help immediately. After the bleeding stops, rinse the wound with water and apply an antibiotic cream.
  • Heimlich Maneuver
The Heimlich maneuver is designed to aid those who have swallowed a foreign object and started choking on it. The choking is severe when the victim is unable to talk. To do the Heimlich maneuver:
    1. Wrap your arms around the victim and place a fist just above the belly button.
    2. Quickly thrust in an inward and upward movement.
    3. Repeat the procedure until the victim has spat the object out.
  • Stopping Severe Bleeding
Suppose you happen to encounter serious accidents or injuries. In that case, there is a possibility of injured patients losing their lives due to severe blood loss. As a bystander, you are advised to apply pressure on the wounded area, preferably with sterile material. However, during emergencies, shirts or any clothing will do. You may also raise the wounded area above the heart to reduce the bleeding.

If the wound pulsates and the blood is bright red, the patient may be experiencing an arterial blood loss. These kinds of instances can cause a person to die in minutes.
